Preparation of the indicator Cabbage juice: Half a head of red cabbage is chopped up finely. The cabbage is covered with 800 mL of boiling water. The juice cooled down to room temperature is sieved and 5 mL of ethanol are added. The liquid should be a dark reddish-purple color.
This trial was conducted at the Texas Agricultural Research and Extension Center at Weslaco. Cabbage plants (Brassica oleracea capitata L. 'Grand Slam') were established in two-row 9.14 m (30 feet) long plots on 15 September 1997.
Description: Large 1-2 ft. leaves cleary scented with skunk-like ofor. Flowers appearing before leaves in Feb-march. Surrounding patch, even in snow is clear due to thermogenesis of salicylic acid and salicylates in the flower.
