ARAB, AL - Commissioner of Agriculture & Industries, Ron Sparks presented 4th grader Emma King, daughter of Mike and Meyna King of Arab, a $1,000 scholarship last month from Bonnie Plant Farm for raising a 12.5 lb. cabbage.

The Cabbage White is possibly the most common butterfly species in the world. It has a wingspan of 1 5/8 - 2 1/4 inches and is basically white with the forewing tip black. The undersides are yellowish-green. Range and Habitat This species was introduced from Europe around 1860.
Cabbage stocks for New York as of January 1, 2001 are estimated at 1.43 million hundredweight, according to the New York Agricultural Statistics Service. This is 22 percent below the holdings for the same date last year. Yields are estimated at 440 cwt.
On the map it is called Cabbage tree Bay but there are very few cabbage trees to be seen. Once they were thick through here but in the early days of white settlement they were cut down for building materials in the development of Sydney Town.
Characteristics: White, with one (male) or two (female) rounded black spots on dorsal forewing. Black apical suffusion on dorsal forewing, and dark suffusion on dorsal wings nearest body.
