Cabbage and other cole crops in the northern states and Canada are often attacked by the cabbage maggot* (CM). This European fly was probably imported with a number of mustard-like weeds (which serve as wild hosts ) in ships' ballast during colonial times.
The bicarbonate of soda or ammonia (alkalis) should have turned the cabbabge water a pale greeny-blue. The vinegar or lemon juice (acids) should have turned the cabbage water a reddish colour.
