Cauliflower by Paul Muldoon Plants that grow in the dark have been developed through gene-splicing, in which light-producing bacteria from the mouths of fish are introduced to cabbage, carrots and potatoes.
Cauliflower is a type of cabbage that features a condensed head of thick, incompletely developed flowers and stalks, which typically have the appearance of white curd.
In the central and south coast, cauliflower is trans- planted and harvested year-round. In the Central Valley, planting begins in mid-July for harvest from October to November.
This cool-season vegetable is a close relative of cabbage. However, cauliflower takes longer to develop and is not as cold hardy as cabbage and broccoli. Therefore, cauliflower often is considered more difficult to grow. It is also fairly intolerant of summer heat and drought.
Distribution: Main growing areas lie in China, India, West and Mid Europe. Also cultivated in tropical zones of Africa, Mid and South America and Oceania. Prefers deep, humus-rich soil with a good supply of water and high humidity. Frost sensitive.

Upon enactment of the NAFTA on January 1, 1994, several new U.S. tariff lines were created for cauliflower. For cauliflower reduced in size, the U.S. initial tariff for imports from Mexico was lowered from 17.5 percent to 12.5 percent.
