This is the favorite soup of my third daughter, Rachel. In fact, it's one of the first things she learned to cook on her own. The Asian flavors are a great change of pace in our generally Ashkenazi or European repertoire of soups. You can vary the number of mushrooms depending on your taste.

The canola oil, cornstarch, ginger, garlic, and teriyaki sauce are mandatory. All else is optional. There are no measurements because I don't know how big your frying pan/wok is or how much you like certain foods (or how much I actually put in, to be honest).

I worked out this recipe in an attempt to duplicate the Mandarin Soup served at the Peking Royal Kitchen in Pittsburgh. My friends all agree that it is a good replica; some prefer my version to the ``real thing.''
