A number of caterpillar pests feed on members of the cabbage family broccoli, cauliflower, kale, brussel sprouts, collards, kohlrabi, and of course, cabbage. While a dozen or more caterpillar pests attack this plant group, a few major ones inflict the most damage.

A few reports of cutworm damage have been received from southern Indiana, most of those are likely dingy cutworm. The dingy cutworm overwinters as a partially grown larva, so early leaf feeding is not uncommon. Fortunately it is not the threat to stand losses that the black cutworm is.

-Planting: This vegetable grows best during periods of cool temperatures, and you'll have better luck in most areas if it is planted during midsummer for early fall ripening. Start the seeds indoors or in their own special planting bed outdoors 6-8 weeks before planting time.

Another relative of the cabbage, this vegetable is a cool-weather crop that does best planted midsummer for early fall ripening. -Planting: Plant the seedlings 18-25 inches from each other in rows about 30 inches apart. Cutworm collars like the ones used with broccoli are recommended.
