Have students test a variety of solutions. Some to consider are: Milk of magnesia, soda pop, rainwater, baking soda, salt water, sugar, toothpaste, soap flakes, rubbing alcohol, aspirin, lemon juice, antacid, borax, window cleaner, mouthwash, after-shave lotion. There are many other possibilities.

name A. R. status other age 30s Question - I believe that the answer you gave to what pigment makes beets red and red cabbage red is incorrect. These plants belong to different families and have different pigments. Red Cabbage is colored by anthocyanins. The pigment in beets is betalane (sp?).

Explain that an acid solution has excess H+, hydrogen ions. Can they think of any acids? Vinegar is a common acid, and their stomachs are filled with a strong acid, hydrochloric acid. The hydrochloric acid helps break down food during the digestion process.

Preparation of the indicator Cabbage juice: Half a head of red cabbage is chopped up finely. The cabbage is covered with 800 mL of boiling water. The juice cooled down to room temperature is sieved and 5 mL of ethanol are added. The liquid should be a dark reddish-purple color.
